Ukraine
Bob Lefsetz’s Original Post – “Ukraine”
“I mean I remember the Iraq war. The first one, the Bush I one. Where you turned on the TV and saw the SCUD missiles and the explosions. But that was before America took its right turn, before the multiple truths, when we still believed that the U.S. was an unbeatable paradise/power.”
How about the Korean War? Or that little war in Vietnam that lasted nearly 20 years and took more than 55,000 American lives and cost $168 billion or $1 trillion in today’s dollars? Did the U.S. go into Iraq the second time or into Afghanistan for 20 years just because we believed that the U.S. was an “unbeatable paradise/power”?
Did the destruction of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York have anything to do with it?
“Paradise”? What has that got to do with anything? The U.S. is no “paradise”, but one must wonder why people from all around the world are trying to illegally get into America and not Cuba or Venezuela or Nigeria. Or China…
“Today China is on course to supersede the U.S., by virtue of the number of people if nothing else. That’s a huge market. And those people have money.”
China doesn’t seem to have a problem with millions of people risking their lives to get into that Communist “worker’s paradise”. And they are making moves to take over Taiwan the same way Russia hopes to take over Ukraine.
“Xi keeps throwing up buildings and highways in seeming instants, never mind fast trains. Sure, he’s ruling with an iron fist, and the Uighurs’ rights are being trampled. But those trains are running on time!”
Well, that’s your standard then! Let’s bring back Mussolini:
“There’s an old saying about Mussolini that goes something like this: “Mussolini made the trains run on time.” In other words, even dictators have their good points. Sure, fascism is an often brutal model of efficient government, full of poverty and corruption, but hey, at least the trains were newly punctual.”
You’re quick to criticize Bush II and naturally, even find a way to go after Trump who “wanted Greenland”. You neglect the fact that Democrat Harry Truman got the U.S. into the Korean War, and Democrats John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Baines Johnson started the Vietnam War. Democrat Bill Clinton took the U.S. into the Kosovo War. Democrat Barack Obama added 70,000 troops to the Afghanistan War:
“In his first few years in office, Obama dramatically ramped up the U.S. presence in Afghanistan, from a little over 30,000 to more than 100,000 troops at the peak in 2011.”
How The U.S. Troop Levels In Afghanistan Have Changed Under Obama
And yet it was Republican President Ronald Reagan who played a primary role in ending the Cold War and bringing about the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
“The American president who effectively wrote finis to the Cold War was Ronald Reagan. He entered the Oval Office with a clear set of ideas he had developed over a lifetime of study. He forced the Soviet Union to abandon its goal of world communism by challenging its legitimacy, regaining superiority in the arms race and using human rights as a powerful psychological weapon.
By the time Reagan left office in January 1989, the Reagan Doctrine had achieved its goal: Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet system, publicly acknowledged the failures of Marxism-Leninism and the futility of Russian imperialism. In Margaret Thatcher’s words, Ronald Reagan had ended the Cold War without firing a shot.”
And yet, you warn us that:
“Democracy is hanging by a thread, all over the world. Autocrats are on the rise.”
Your fear-mongering angst is embarrassing and simply ignorant; you do not know history and are unfamiliar with the facts.
“Democracy is smashing autocracy.
Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, democracy has spread rapidly across the world, beating the communist and fascist regimes that had arisen since the 1920s.
Though now it’s still close, the world has more democracies than autocracies.”
The World Is a Lot Less F*cked Than We Think It Is
You state with certainty that:
“Marche says how the founding fathers expected the Constitution would be rewritten every couple of decades. Meanwhile, we’ve got Supreme Court justices believing issues must be decided based on the intention of the framers. Come on, could even you have foreseen the internet?”
Thomas Jefferson believed that Americans should revisit the Constitution every 20 years and rewrite it from scratch. Wouldn’t that be fun to watch in this day and age?
“The Founding Fathers expected that changes would be needed, and so they provided the amendment process.
They never foresaw left-wing judges deciding “You know, even though the Constitution doesn’t say a damn thing about abortion, we’re going to create a right to abortion anyway.” Or “Even though the Second Amendment says people have a right to bear arms, we’re going to pretend it doesn’t.”
But, the INTERNET! Bob Lefsetz wants to rewrite the Constitution because of the Internet! LOL!
“Writing it to match up with existing technologies or societal norms is not what the Constitution requires. It requires, as it always has, the ability for intelligent, well-informed people, to have an open dialogue about societal subjects. The nature of politics is that no two people will ever agree on 100% of all issues and therefore it is necessary to create a forum and system where people can come together to try to find the best forms of compromise to move society, as a whole, forward. That is the framework the Constitution allows. Technology is irrelevant to that framework.”
And then you suggest that your inbox is a much more reliable source than your favorite newspaper, the New York Times. What do those “wankers” know? Entertainment blogger Bob Lefsetz has all the answers!
“Meanwhile, the “New York Times” runs an opinion piece by some highfalutin’ wanker saying there will be no civil war. Well, if he read my inbox he’d think differently.”
Finally, after attacking George W. Bush, Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson, Brexit and the U.K., Germany, France, Italy and most of Europe, you say:
“So Putin takes Ukraine, and we do…
Essentially nothing.
I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do”.
You’re a lot of help. Lots of whining and bitching and angst. What should we do when Communist China attacks and takes over Taiwan? Complain about George W. Bush, Donald Trump and Tucker Carlson?
Go back to writing about something you know actually something about – music, entertainment and the arts.
Thank you for your sharing. I am worried that I lack creative ideas. It is your article that makes me full of hope. Thank you. But, I have a question, can you help me?
