Bob Lefsetz and the “Lefsetz Letter”

First in Music Analysis

And he is! I’ve been a fan of Bob Lefsetz and a subscriber to his newsletter and blog for more than a decade.

His own web page describes him this way:

Who is Bob Lefsetz

Bob Lefsetz is the author of “The Lefsetz Letter.” Famous for being beholden to no one and speaking the truth, Lefsetz addresses the issues that are at the core of the music business: downloading, copy protection, pricing and the music itself.

He knows and understands the entertainment world and music business better than anyone out there.

But over the last couple of years Mr. Lefsetz has been preaching his own brand of left coast politics. Not music – politics. And the radical left wing, Democrats, Socialists, race-baiting politicians and biased mainstream media love it. Entertainers, performers, and musicians like myself who signed up to receive his newsletter for his great insight and knowledge about the workings of the music industry, are bombarded a couple of times every week with his attacks against Republicans, middle America and everybody here in fly-over country. And, of course, he insults and attacks President Trump at every opportunity.

That is his right and I support him in that regard. But much like many Hollywood movie stars, singing divas, and rock & roll artists, Bob Lefsetz presumes that his expertise in the entertainment world naturally makes him a an important political commentator. It’s a classic bait and switch. If he wants to rant against Donald Trump, he should start a new political blog and ask for people to subscribe. I do not want to unsubscribe because I still look forward to, enjoy and learn from his background in entertainment. But I find it offensive when he uses his fan base and his newsletter to harangue them over his progressive political positions.

One of his favorite catch-phrases is, “What the fuck kind of world do we live in”, blah, blah, blah…

“What the fuck kind of world do we live in” when a college dropout and ski bum who spent most of his life just listening to records now thinks he has the moral and intellectual superiority to rant about politics on his music newsletter?

I have written to him many times to make some of these points and to suggest that he stop throwing his radical politics in our faces after we sign up for his music industry blog.

In this blog, I will share some of my own letters to Mr. Lefsetz and provide quotes and links to his essays that I found particularly annoying,
